ISSF Coaching

Becoming an ISSF Coach

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) runs the global coach-accreditation program for Olympic shooting disciplines. ISSF coaches are recognised internationally and can coach athletes at World Cup and Olympic-level events.

What an ISSF coach does

  • Coaches Olympic-discipline pistol (10m Air, 25m Rapid Fire, 25m Pistol, 25m Standard, 50m Pistol).
  • Plans long-term athlete development from junior through senior competition.
  • Operates at national team training camps, international competitions and ISSF World Cups.
  • Maintains accreditation through continuing education and re-certification.

Entry requirements

  • Hold a current national-level coaching accreditation (Shooting Australia or equivalent).
  • Active coaching experience with competitive shooters.
  • Nomination by your national federation (Shooting Australia for Australian applicants).
  • Completion of an ISSF Coach Academy course (Level "D" through Level "A").
VAPA Coaching

Becoming a VAPA Coach

VAPA (Victorian Amateur Pistol Association) is the Victorian state body for ISSF pistol shooting. A VAPA-recognised coach is accredited through Shooting Australia and active in supporting Victorian clubs and athletes.

Pathway

  1. Join a VAPA-affiliated club and shoot competitively.
  2. Complete the Shooting Australia Club Coach online course.
  3. Attend a coaching workshop hosted by VAPA or a partner club.
  4. Apply for VAPA coach recognition with current Working With Children Check.
  5. Continue with Development Coach and beyond for state / national pathways.

Coach Level 1 Course

The Pistol Australia National Coaching Council Sports-Specific Coach Level 1 course is the standard entry point into accredited pistol coaching in Australia. Delivered as a two-day program combining lecture-based instruction, range work, and an examination.

Course structure

The course runs in three parts over two days:

  1. Lecture instruction — Basics of pistol shooting (stance, grip, trigger control, sighting, follow-through, shot process).
  2. Range instruction & evaluation — On-the-line work in pairs, one coaching, one shooting. Presenters evaluate technique delivery.
  3. Examination — 90-minute written exam (50-question questionnaire, 85% pass mark, plus multiple choice, true/false and a novice-introduction assignment).

Candidate requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Active in Pistol Australia shooting for a minimum of 4 years (preferred).
  • Club Instructor certificate preferred prior to attending.
  • Sound knowledge of the fundamentals — sighting, trigger application, position.
  • Current Working With Children Check (state-dependent).
  • Completion of Sport Integrity Australia required online modules (see table below).
  • Signed Pistol Australia Code of Conduct.

iPhone App

ISSF Coach — track every session

All VAPA accredited coaches are required to record their coaching sessions in the ISSF Coach iPhone app. Session logs feed directly into your coach development record, count toward re-accreditation, and give VAPA the data we need to support athletes through the state and national pathway.

VAPA and Pistol Australia require evidence of ongoing coaching activity. The app provides verifiable session logs that count toward your annual coach update.

State coaches and selectors use session history to identify shooters progressing through the pathway and to plan squad camps with the right athletes.

A timestamped session record protects coaches and athletes — clear documentation of who was coached, when, where and by whom.

How to use the app

Sign in

Use the same email and password as your vapacoach.au members account. Sessions sync to your VAPA coach profile automatically.

Start a session

Tap New session, pick the discipline (10m AP/AR, 25m, 50m, club) and choose the shooter or squad from your roster.

Coach as normal

Add quick notes, drill names, target images or voice memos as you go. The timer runs in the background — no need to keep the screen open.

End & sync

Stop the session, review the summary, tap Save. The record uploads to your coach profile and is visible in the VAPA Members area.

Per shooter

  • Cumulative coach contact hours
  • Discipline mix and progression over time
  • Notes accessible to the shooter (with consent) and to other VAPA coaches working with them
  • Pathway tags (club / state squad / national) for selector visibility
Privacy & data handling. Session data is stored on VAPA's vapacoach.au server and is only visible to the recording coach, the shooter (where consented), and VAPA coaching directors. Athletes can request export or deletion of their data at any time by emailing coach@vapacoach.au.
