Becoming an ISSF Coach

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) runs the global coach-accreditation program for Olympic shooting disciplines. ISSF coaches are recognised internationally and can coach athletes at World Cup and Olympic-level events.

What an ISSF coach does

  • Coaches Olympic-discipline pistol (10m Air, 25m Rapid Fire, 25m Pistol, 25m Standard, 50m Pistol).
  • Plans long-term athlete development from junior through senior competition.
  • Operates at national team training camps, international competitions and ISSF World Cups.
  • Maintains accreditation through continuing education and re-certification.

Entry requirements

  • Hold a current national-level coaching accreditation (Shooting Australia or equivalent).
  • Active coaching experience with competitive shooters.
  • Nomination by your national federation (Shooting Australia for Australian applicants).
  • Completion of an ISSF Coach Academy course (Level "D" through Level "A").

Becoming a VAPA Coach

VAPA (Victorian Amateur Pistol Association) is the Victorian state body for ISSF pistol shooting. A VAPA-recognised coach is accredited through Shooting Australia and active in supporting Victorian clubs and athletes.

Pathway

  1. Join a VAPA-affiliated club and shoot competitively.
  2. Complete the Shooting Australia Club Coach online course.
  3. Attend a coaching workshop hosted by VAPA or a partner club.
  4. Apply for VAPA coach recognition with current Working With Children Check.
  5. Continue with Development Coach and beyond for state / national pathways.

Coach Level 1 Course

The Pistol Australia National Coaching Council Sports-Specific Coach Level 1 course is the standard entry point into accredited pistol coaching in Australia. Delivered as a two-day program combining lecture-based instruction, range work, and an examination.

Course structure

The course runs in three parts over two days:

  1. Lecture instruction β€” Basics of pistol shooting (stance, grip, trigger control, sighting, follow-through, shot process).
  2. Range instruction & evaluation β€” On-the-line work in pairs, one coaching, one shooting. Presenters evaluate technique delivery.
  3. Examination β€” 90-minute written exam (50-question questionnaire, 85% pass mark, plus multiple choice, true/false and a novice-introduction assignment).

Candidate requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Active in Pistol Australia shooting for a minimum of 4 years (preferred).
  • Club Instructor certificate preferred prior to attending.
  • Sound knowledge of the fundamentals β€” sighting, trigger application, position.
  • Current Working With Children Check (state-dependent).
  • Completion of Sport Integrity Australia required online modules (see table below).
  • Signed Pistol Australia Code of Conduct.

Complete these via elearning.sportintegrity.gov.au before attending the course. Certificates of completion should be forwarded to your State/Territory Coaching Director.
